Dell Vostro 3000 Series Packs Portable Core i5 Power [Dell] http://netbookzen.com/dell-vostro-3000-series-packs-portable-core-i5-power-dell/ http://netbookzen.com/dell-vostro-3000-series-packs-portable-core-i5-power-dell/#comments Tue, 09 Mar 2010 05:01:00 +0000 Brian Barrett Gizmodo-5488695 If Dell's Vostro V13 was Batman's laptop, it looks like the new Vostro 3000 series might just be Bruce Wayne's. They're portable, powerful, and sleek rigs for professionals. But are they a value play, or a luxury item?

That's the big unanswered question right now, though we'll know soon enough; they go on sale today in the US. If the pricing is in line with the V13, though, these could be worth a closer look. The Vostro 3300, 3400, 3500, and 3700 range from 13-inches to 17-inches, and all offer Core i3 and Core i5 processor options. For true juiceheads, the 17-inch Vostro 3700 even includes a Core i7 Quad Core option. Even better: a discrete graphics option. You can add an Nvidia Geforce 310M 512MB graphics card to the 3300-3500, while the 3700 has an optional Nvidia Geforce GT 330M 1GB card.

You even get an optical drive, a rarity these days on an SMB laptop, but something that I'm sure at least some people will be happy to see. You can also order the 3300 without, if you'd prefer to save yourself the extra quarter of a pound that the optical drive adds.

Other specs—including up to a 9 cell battery, 500GB hard drive, and 6GB memory—are in line with the Vostro's competitors. We'll just have to wait and see if the pricing is as well.

MSI Wind U160 Netbook Claims Aggressive 15-Hour One-Charge Power [Msi] http://netbookzen.com/msi-wind-u160-netbook-claims-aggressive-15-hour-one-charge-power-msi/ http://netbookzen.com/msi-wind-u160-netbook-claims-aggressive-15-hour-one-charge-power-msi/#comments Mon, 08 Mar 2010 20:58:26 +0000 Brian Barrett Gizmodo-5488514 MSI has updated their netbook line once again. While the U130 and U135 already packed Intel's latest Pine Trail processor, the U160 is throwing down the battery gauntlet. Fifteen hours on one charge? That's nuts.

Of course, it's not really fifteen hours, since actual battery life is never anywhere close to listed. And the claim only applies to when the netbook is in "Eco" mode, which undoubtedly requires a significant performance trade-off. But even if the U160 can achieve 60% of its claim during normal usage, that's as impressive a netbook battery life as we've seen.

The $380 price tag also includes a 10-inch LED display (1024x600), the Pine Trail's standard 1GB RAM, and and Windows 7 Starter. But you'll have to make do with a 160GB HD and an island-style keyboard, which on a netbook doesn't leave a lot of room for error. But—especially if the battery life claim holds up—you could certainly do worse for more money.

MSI North America Announces Availability of the 2010 iF Product Design Award Winning Wind U160
Stylish new netbook features Pine Trail Platform, 15-Hour Battery Life, and Windows 7

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA – March 08, 2010 – MSI Computer, a leading manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, is proud to announce the availability of the 2010 iF Product Design Award Winning Wind U160. The U160, MSI's second netbook to feature the new Pine Trail platform, is powered by the Intel® Atom N450™ Processor. The incredibly efficient and Energy Star compliant U160 boosts a 15 hour battery life when running in MSI's exclusive ECO mode. This allows users to get through a full day of work or school without having to bring their adapter.

Abandoning the traditional clamshell form, the Wind U160 ushers in a new era of netbook design. From the illuminated MSI logo on the netbook's outer surface to the power button placed on the U160's cylindrical hinge, the newest Wind model sports a slim new footprint. Just 0.98 inches at its widest point, the U160 is the thinnest Wind model to date.

The units' raised chiclet keyboard and seamless wide touchpad increase both accuracy and comfort while typing. The U160 is available in a fashionable sparkling gold or a more formal black, and its Color Film Print finish gives it a sleek stylish new look.

The newest edition to the Wind family will also ships with 10-inch backlit LED display, 1 GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive, a 6-cell battery, Bluetooth connectivity and Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter. MSI also included its user friendly EasyFace facial recognition security software to help U160 users protect their information.

The MSI Wind U160 costs just $379.99 and is available now at Fry's (Fry's product number L1600) and online at Newegg and Buy.com.

ASUS’ Three 3D Monitors Range In 23 to 27-Inch Options and Will Likely Be Dirt Cheap [3dTv] http://netbookzen.com/asus-three-3d-monitors-range-in-23-to-27-inch-options-and-will-likely-be-dirt-cheap-3dtv/ http://netbookzen.com/asus-three-3d-monitors-range-in-23-to-27-inch-options-and-will-likely-be-dirt-cheap-3dtv/#comments Thu, 04 Mar 2010 10:31:14 +0000 Kat Hannaford Gizmodo-5485425 ASUS has a habit of pricing its products very fairly, and while 3D technology is still in its infancy, I can't imagine them charging too much for their three monitors shown off this week at CeBIT.

All three of the monitors will use NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision glasses, with the first monitor launching being the 23-inch MG236, which has dual-link DVI connectivity so all that 3D video is played at full 1080p resolution. A 23.6-inch PG246 and 27-inch PG276 will also go on sale, but much later in the year apparently. ASUS hasn't been forthcoming with the prices on these three monitors, but as I said before, expect them to be loooow. [TechInStyle]

HP ProBooks Get Prettier Inside and Out [Laptops] http://netbookzen.com/hp-probooks-get-prettier-inside-and-out-laptops/ http://netbookzen.com/hp-probooks-get-prettier-inside-and-out-laptops/#comments Mon, 01 Mar 2010 05:01:00 +0000 Brian Barrett Gizmodo-5481930 HP's ProBook s-series wants to be your everything: punchy enough for work, stylish enough for home. And with a new brushed aluminum industrial design and Core i3/i5/i7 processing power, they may just bridge that gap.

HP's rolling out four new ProBook models, ranging from the 13.3-inch 4320s to the heavy-duty 17.3-inch 4720s. In addition to those speedy Arrandale processors and "caviar" and "bordeaux" aluminum finishes, the new line-up also features optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4350 discrete graphics (compared with the previous generation's Radeon 4330, HD LED-backlit displays, and an optional 2MP camera.

The ProBooks also feature DayStarter, a feature that lets you view your calendar to distract you while your computer loads, and ArcSoft TotalMedia Suite audio and video editing software. WIth an optional 9-cell battery, the battery life is listed at an impressive 10 hours.

You won't find any USB 3.0 here, and the price points—starting at $719 for the 13-inch base configuration—are good-not-great. But if you need a work notebook with a little flair, and a home notebook with a little kick, ProBook might be your answer for both. You'll have a chance to find out when they become available later this month. [HP]

HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet Graduates to Capacitive Multitouch Display [Tablets] http://netbookzen.com/hp-elitebook-2740p-tablet-graduates-to-capacitive-multitouch-display-tablets/ http://netbookzen.com/hp-elitebook-2740p-tablet-graduates-to-capacitive-multitouch-display-tablets/#comments Mon, 01 Mar 2010 05:01:00 +0000 Brian Barrett Gizmodo-5481943 The HP EliteBook 2730p was a tough little convertible tablet, and its successor— HP's EliteBook 2740p—is no exception. The 2740p meets the same rugged MIL-STD 810G military standards, and adds a capacitive touch screen and Core i5/i7 goodness.

The 12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) LED display includes anti-glare and optional outdoor view, and can be operated with a pen, your finger, the keyboard, or some combination thereof. Under the hood, you've got your choice of Core i7 or Core i5 processors, but there's sadly no discrete graphics option.

You'll get up to five hours out of the standard six-cell battery, but can add on an HP 2700 ultra-slim battery for an additional six hours (listed). And the standard set-up weighs under four pounds—not bad for a tough guy convertible tablet. The HP EliteBook 2740p will be available in the US in April, starting at $1600.

Sony Vaio P Clone Can’t Compete with the Original [Clones] http://netbookzen.com/sony-vaio-p-clone-cant-compete-with-the-original-clones/ http://netbookzen.com/sony-vaio-p-clone-cant-compete-with-the-original-clones/#comments Sun, 28 Feb 2010 22:00:00 +0000 Jack Loftus Gizmodo-5482173 So, the Sony Vaio P has a clone. Congrats, Sony! Too bad the mimicry ends with the aesthetics:

The appearance is spot on, but the insides are decidedly sub-par. The Atom processor is a less powerful than the processor offered in the Vaio P, and the memory maxes out at 1GB. If you're comparing, that's a full GB short of the original.

Since this is a clone however, the price is really the only area where one could say it "competes" with Sony's premium-priced Vaio P.

The clone offers a 160GB for about $300, as well as a $380 model with 350GB storage, 2Gb ram and 3G.

Aaand scene. [Gizchina - Thanks, Andi]

ASUS Eee PC T101MT Convertible Struggles in Hands-On Preview [Asus Eee PC] http://netbookzen.com/asus-eee-pc-t101mt-convertible-struggles-in-hands-on-preview-asus-eee-pc/ http://netbookzen.com/asus-eee-pc-t101mt-convertible-struggles-in-hands-on-preview-asus-eee-pc/#comments Sun, 28 Feb 2010 19:30:00 +0000 Jack Loftus Gizmodo-5482194 When we previewed the Asus Eee PC T101MT convertible netbook/tablet earlier this month, it was just on paper. The plucky little netbook looked promising, for an Eee PC, but this latest string of hands-on previews is just plain ugly.

The 10.1-inch touchscreen tablet portion, for example, struggles with basic tasks, touch recognition and responsiveness. The previewer rated the T101MT "poor" in these areas. Calibrating the device improved responsiveness slightly, but there were still areas of the screen, like the top, where the software struggled to keep up with the user's input.

Then there's the video:

newVideoPlayer( {"type":"video","player":"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9754220&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1","customParams":[],"width":500,"height":375,"ratio":0.75,"flashData":"","embedName":null,"objectId":null,"noEmbed":false,"source":"vimeo"} );

Now, keep in mind this is all pre-production hardware we're seeing, and could improve before launch. Maybe. [Touchscreen Tablet via Engadget]
