SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Inkling, maker of an exciting new publishing platform for tablet devices, announced its participation in the Virginia Department of Education’s “Beyond Textbooks” program to move digital learning content into the classroom. Across the state, a cohort of Advanced Placement (AP) Biology students enrolled in Virtual Virginia, the VDOE’s online learning program, will receive iPads with one of McGraw-Hill Education’s bestselling textbooks enhanced with features like 3-D molecules, interactive assessment, social note sharing and more. The interactive textbooks are powered by Inkling.
“We’re confident that students using the Inkling versions will be more engaged with the content, more engaged with one another, and more engaged in learning overall”
“Digital technology holds enormous potential for transforming instruction and for cost savings for Virginia school divisions, which currently spend $70 million a year on textbooks,” Governor Bob McDonnell said.
In addition to those students using the enhanced Inkling version of the title on iPads, some students will also use the print edition of the title. The two groups will be studied to compare the different methods, measuring not only test scores, but also student engagement, the amount of time spent studying and other key academic metrics.
“We’re confident that students using the Inkling versions will be more engaged with the content, more engaged with one another, and more engaged in learning overall,” said Matt MacInnis, founder and CEO of Inkling.
The social sharing capabilities of Inkling will allow students to see notes and highlights from the teacher, as well as from other students across the state, right inside their textbook.
“Especially in a virtual classroom setting, the human connections enabled by Inkling will increase engagement and improve learning,” says MacInnis.
“We’re very excited about expanding the use of our digital content and learning tools for the state’s high school students. We’re setting them up for success in the digital teaching and learning environment of today’s colleges,” said Jeff Livingston, senior vice president of McGraw-Hill’s College and Career Readiness Learning Solutions Center. “All of McGraw-Hill’s content for elementary and high schools is available digitally, and Virginia’s ‘Beyond Textbooks’ initiative opens the door to a truly enriching and interactive learning experience that an online environment delivers so well.”
